It's Not Too Late: Choosing Adoption Last Minute in Kansas

How to Choose a Last-Minute Adoption for Your Child

You still have choices, even if you are already at the hospital or back home with your baby. If you are close to your due date—or you have already given birth—and you are starting to feel that parenting may not be the right fit for your situation, you are not alone.

Many women come to this decision later than they expected. In Kansas, adoption can still be an option late in pregnancy or after birth, and support is available when you need it.

At American Adoptions of Kansas, we talk through those options with you without judgment. Whether you are in your third trimester, at the hospital, or already home, our local team can help you understand what comes next and make a plan that feels right for you.

Can I Choose Adoption at the Last Minute in Kansas?

Yes. You can choose adoption at any point, including while you are in labor or after you have left the hospital. Adoption does not always begin months in advance. In many situations, an adoption plan can come together within days—or even within hours after birth.

Because we’re licensed in Kansas, we can move quickly when needed. In many cases, we can help you start making a plan within a few hours.

Choosing Adoption in the Third Trimester

For many women, the third trimester is when everything starts to feel more immediate. If you are still weighing your options, you still have time to make decisions about what you want and what feels most comfortable to you.

  • Make a plan for the hospital. Decide what you want your hospital stay to look like and what kind of future you picture for your child.
  • Choose an adoptive family. Review profiles and video journals from families who are ready to adopt and have already completed their background checks and home studies.
  • Ask about financial help. Kansas law allows for help with pregnancy-related expenses such as medical bills, groceries, and rent.
  • Work with your care team. Whether you are in Wichita, Overland Park, Kansas City, or a smaller community, we can coordinate with your medical providers based on your preferences.

Last Minute Hospital Adoption

If you are already at the hospital, adoption is still an option. You do not need to have everything figured out before you call. If you are thinking about adoption while you are there, you are still the one making the decisions.

You can create a hospital plan at that point, including who you want in the room and how much time you want with your baby. Under K.S.A. § 59-2114, you must wait at least 12 hours after birth before signing adoption paperwork. That time is meant to give you space to recover and make a decision you feel sure about.

Choosing Adoption after Giving Birth

You can still choose adoption after you leave the hospital. We often hear from women who go home, have more time to think, and realize that parenting is not the right path for them right now.

If that happens, we can help you start looking at families right away. Many waiting families are ready to travel when they are called. If you need a little time to think, we can also talk through short-term care options so your baby is cared for while you decide what feels right.

How Last-Minute Adoption Works in Kansas

Even when the timeline is short, the process can still be clear and manageable. Here is what it usually looks like:

  1. Talk with a specialist. You’ll speak with someone who can answer your questions, explain your options, and listen to what matters most to you.
  2. Learn about your rights. We explain how adoption works in Kansas, including the legal steps and the rights of your baby’s father.
  3. Choose a family. You can look at families based on your preferences and choose the one that feels like the best fit.
  4. Complete the paperwork. After the 12-hour waiting period has passed, local attorneys can walk you through the legal documents and make sure you understand each step.
  5. Keep receiving support. Support can continue after placement through counseling and other resources.

Choosing an Adoptive Family Quickly

A shorter timeline does not mean you have fewer choices. Working with an established agency gives you access to families who are already prepared to adopt.

Within a few hours of your first call, we can share profiles and video journals from waiting families. These families have already completed the screening and approval process. That gives you the chance to learn about their homes, values, and hopes for adoption before making your decision.
